The majority of New Building, Demolition and Alteration permits were issued in emerging areas. The City of New York plans to invest 95.85 billion dollars over the next decade to improve infrastructure, buildings, and neighborhoods across the five boroughs.

ABOUT THE FEATURED PRESENTERS: Meet the two prominent architects and urban designers tasked with the vision and design of mega developments and cities.
Vishaan Chakrabarti, Founder, PAU, Practice for Architecture and Urbanism
Mr. Chakrabarti launched his practice focused on the advancement of cities through cosmopolitan architecture and strategically innovative urban planning, today PAU is working on projects from Brooklyn to Mongolia.nPrior to founding PAU, Vishaan was a principal at SHoP Architects where he co led major architecture and urban design projects including the master plan and first building at the Domino Sugar site in Williamsburg as well as the master plan and first building at the Essex Crossing site at Seward Park.
Chakrabarti was also the president of Moynihan Station Venture, and remains an ardent advocate for the reconstruction of New York’s Pennsylvania Station. Chakrabarti served under Mayor Michael Bloomberg as the Director of the Manhattan Office for the New York Department of City Planning, where he successfully collaborated on the now realized efforts to save the High Line, rezone Hudson Yards, extend the number 7 subway line, rebuild the East River Waterfront, expand Columbia University, and reincorporate the street grid at the World Trade Center site after the tragic events of September 11. PAU received a Project Honor Award in the 2017 AIA New York Design Awards for our proposal for a new Penn Station.
About the Domino Sugar Refinery: Nesting
Like the Brooklyn Navy Yard and Industry City, the Domino Sugar Refinery will soon return to life as the nerve center of a new working waterfront, the heart of a 6.6 acre park that will anchor a brilliant new mixed-use neighborhood being built by our extraordinary client, Two Trees Management. When the development’s full build-out is completed at some point in the 2020s, it will contain an estimated 2,800 apartments, 700 of them affordable, surrounding the refinery office space, along the six acre park.
PAUs new version is at once simpler and more sophisticated: a rectangular glass building topped by a barrel vault, which sits within, but doesn't touch, the existing walls. A layer of air, 10 to 12 feet deep and open to the sky, separates the tough exterior from the more delicate structure inside, with a courtyard on one side accentuating the divide. Sunlight and rain pour down between the nested buildings, brightening the offices and turning the outer layer into a perforated screen made of brick. The19th century structure becomes a freestanding ruin, its unglazed windows resembling the stacked arches of an ancient roman aqueduct. Claire Weisz, Co-Founder and Principal in Charge, WXY
Claire Weisz, architect and urbanist, is a founding principal of the award winning WXY practice based in New York City. The whose work focuses on innovative approaches to public space, buildings, and cities. WXY is an award winning multi disciplinary practice specializing in the realization of urban design, planning and architectural solutions in challenging contexts.
WXY has received design and urban planning awards from among others the American Institute of Architects, the American Planning Association and from the Architecture League its League Prize and was selected as an Emerging Voice in 2011.
WXYs integrated design process involves clients and stakeholders, to coordinate and solve complex design problems, yielding solutions as noteworthy for their intimacy and detail as for their civic dignity and amenity. Her recent and ongoing work includes Blue Dunes, The Brooklyn Tech Triangle a study of Brooklyn growing tech culture, the East River Blueway and reconstructing the five miles of Rockaway Boardwalk post Sandy as well the Peninsula.
About the Peninsula
The Peninsula Development Team, led by Gilbane Development Company along with Hudson Companies and Mutual Housing Association of New York, was selected by New York City Economic Development Corporation and Department of Housing Preservation and Development to transform the former Spofford Juvenile Detention Center in the Bronx’s Hunts Point community into a 5 acre campus featuring 100 percent affordable housing, good jobs, and recreational space.
The 300 million dollar project will create approximately: 740 units of 100 percent affordable housing, 52,000 square feet of open recreational space that includes a new public plaza, 49,000 square feet of light industrial space, 48,000 square feet of community facility space including artist workspace, and 21,000 square feet of ground floor retail and commercial space.
Development of The Peninsula will occur in 3 phases, with phase I to be completed in 2021, phase II to be completed in 2022 and anticipated completion of phase III in 2024. The project is expected to create 177 permanent jobs and more than 1,600 temporary construction jobs, and the selected development team has committed to a 35 percent MWBE goal.
